Demonstrating Urban Wetland Shoreline Improvement at Indian Ridge Marsh North

The Wetlands Initiative

The Wetlands Initiative (TWI) is working at Indian Ridge Marsh - North, a degraded urban wetland site in the Calumet region on Chicago’s Southeast Side, to modify and improve the shoreline to benefit rare wetland-dependent birds and to improve this public site for access and enjoyment by the surrounding underserved communities. TWI has been working at this site in partnership with Chicago Park District and Audubon Great Lakes since 2016. The new round of shoreline modification will build on a highly successful test phase that TWI completed at Indian Ridge Marsh in 2021 with the aim to replicate this method at similar valuable wetland remnants throughout the Calumet. The re-establishment of a natural shoreline gradient will be evaluated through elevational and vegetation surveys by TWI scientists with the results compiled in a report to facilitate replication of this nature-based solution.
